For the weekend, we went to Carmel for the Pebble Beach Food & Wine, a grand event in the food and wine world. Of course as you drive north from Los Angeles, there are many wine temptations along the way and we gave in; we picked up a lot of wines for the weekend; some familiar and some new, since we were going to cook there and we needed wines.
A new discovery for me was the Vina Robles Red 4, $16.00 (51% Petite Syrah, 43% Syrah, 4% Tannat and 2% Touriga, a Portuguese varietal similar to Merlot), a bone dry and very delicious red wine filled with blackberries, cherries and currants. Loved it!
On Saturday we went to Pebble Beach for the food and wine festival. This was my first time at this festival, although our friends and family who came with us had attended it before and they have been bragging about it for the whole year. My hat’s off to the organizers. I don’t think you can have a more beautiful place to hold a wine tasting and they had done a GREAT job of putting together a grand event. There must have been five thousand people there along with hundreds of wineries pouring wines and dozens of chefs putting out bite size morsels of their creations.
Regarding the food, I was not impressed with the quality and the creativity of what was being served. I realize that these were mass produced for the 5000 people who were there and the chefs and the sous chefs were working very hard to serve the hungry and sometimes drunk masses, but the food could have been better.
As to the wines, once again, maybe I am jaded and have tasted a lot of wines; I attend many trade wine tasting events almost on a weekly bases, but I was not impressed with what was being poured. Don’t get me wrong, there were a lot of good wines being poured on Saturday, but nothing excited me, with few noted exceptions.
• Donkey & Goat, a small winery out of Berkeley, yes Berkeley, CA, with very interesting and enjoyable wines.
• Morlet Family Vineyards, delicious wines, on a grander scale coming from Napa and Sonoma, with matching prices, but nevertheless wonderful, delicious and classy wines.
• Paraiso Vineyards from Santa Lucia Highlands with their Pinot Noirs and in particular their 2008 Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir was simply delicious; it had all the elements in the right amount specially the nose. It was great.
This was a wonderful weekend to get away with family and friends and enjoyed it tremendously. After all when we are with our loved ones and there is plenty of food and wine, it doesn’t matter where we are. We are blesses and we should be grateful!

Random Thoughts!
Why can’t people say “no” anymore? Is it because they are afraid to commit and they think they will come across rude or judgmental.
If at first you don’t succeed, have a glass of wine, and see where the mistakes were and learn from it.
Don’t take no for an answer.
Success is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.
“Your Questions, Your Money Live” is a great show on Fox Business Saturday mornings.
I love reading the Weekend Edition of the Financial Times. Great news, great insights from the world of food, wine, art, music, travel, restaurants, fashion, books, business, poetry; great perspectives from all over the world.

Great Wines Steve & Steffanie…
As a wine lover, importer, wholesaler and maker (yes, we are also making wine now - look for upcoming announcements), I don’t pass up an opportunity to taste wines. Two weeks ago we went to Paso Robles on the Central Coast of California for the Harvest Festival and visited some wineries. One of the wineries we visited was the Anglim Winery, our favorite during this trip (http://www.anglimwinery.com/). Steve and Steffanie Anglim are making vineyard specific amazing wines all sourced from Paso Robles. The Zinfandel, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Grenache and Pinot Noir were all amazing.
One of my favorites was the 2005 Cabernet Franc from the Paso Del Sol Vineyards, Paso Robles (btw I opened another bottle last night with roasted chicken, and it was great). This wine has a great nose of cherry and raspberry, a lot of fruit and a big long finish; I am sure the chicken enjoyed it also. Very enjoyable, our guests loved it too. Then again our guests always expect to be served good food and good wine at our home.
Steve and Steffanie are another example of how passion, dedication, hard work and perseverance can produce something that you would be proud of (and very delicious) and make you a success. Keep up the great work Steve and Steffanie…

Good for you Barbara Lynch…
I just read a great article about Barbara Lynch in the November issue of Inc. Magazine (by the way Inc., Entrepreneur and Fast Company are some of my most favorite magazines). What an inspiring story! It shows how hard work, perseverance and dedication pay off in this country. There are no short cuts in life, you just have to do it and don’t give up. Good for you Barbara Lynch.

Back in Brazil...
I got to Sao Paulo, Brazil this morning. It is a long trip from Los Angeles but not as long had I taken another airline.
I flew LAN this time and it was very pleasant, but for a couple of inconveniences.
LAN has a direct flight from Los Angeles to Lima, Peru to Sao Paulo. There is a one hour layover in Lima. It is the same flight number; you just get off and then get back on the plane.
The service on LAN is superb, particularity in the business class, where they offer matching wines with every course. Additionally, LAN is putting in 180-degree lie flat seats for sleeping purposes, which is very comfortable and makes a big difference on a long trip like this.
The flight from Los Angeles to Lima is eight hours and from Lima to Sao Paulo is four hours and fifteen minutes, which makes the entire trip 13 hours and 15 minutes.
Here is my beef, as a business class passenger, we are called first to board the plane, yet, once we get on the bus to be taken to the airplane, since there was no jet way either in Los Angeles or in Lima, we had to wait another 15 minutes for the buses to fill up with all the passengers in the heat of Los Angeles and the heat and humidity of Lima. I would think that once the business class passengers are called and board the bus, they should be taken to the airport and the second bus should bring the rest of the passengers.
I am here in Brazil to meet with our winemakers and taste the new wines. I am very excited about this. As you know Brazil is producing world class wines and our highly rated and award winning PIZZATO Wines are superb and gaining exceptional reputation both in Brazil and in the United States.
I am also here to meet with our master distiller for our award winning Rio Joe’s Cachaça.
Stay tuned for new and exciting news about our Rio Joe’s Silver Cachaça and PIZZATO Wines.
It is getting late now and I will be meeting some friends for dinner. They eat dinner very late hear, no earlier that 10:00 p.m.
Stay tuned…

Rio Joe’s Carnaval Ball was a great success!

The 2008 Rio Joe’s Carnaval Ball was a great success. Everything fell into place very nicely. David, Dolores and Valeria did a great job. Congratulations and thank you for a fantastic Carnaval.
Of course when things happen as they are supposed to happen means that it took a lot of hard work and preparation, and this was no different.
The music was true Carnaval, the food was true Carnaval, and the drinks were true Carnaval, of course serving authentic Caipirinhas with the award winning Rio Joe’s Silver Cachaça and equally delicious PIZZATO Wines. Thank you, thank you.
I had never been at the Vault in Long Beach before but I was impressed. Great venue and the management did a great job in working with us to make sure that the event was a great success and everyone had a great time.
Pictures from the event will be coming soon. They are being developed (“LOL”).

Insights on...Bob Parson's 16 Rules for Success
Bob Parson’s (of GoDaddy.com fame) 16 Rules for Success and my comments.
By: Stepan W. Baghdassarian, November 26, 2006
1. Get and stay out of your comfort zone. Challenge yourself. Columbus would not have discovered America had he stayed in Italy, and Lindbergh would not have flown the Atlantic non-stop had he been content in flying only in the U.S.
2. Never give up. As Winston Churchill said “Never, never, never give up.”
3. When you’re ready to quit, you’re closer than you think. Take a deep breath and try again. Push yourself, you’ll be surprised what you’ll be able to accomplish.
4. With regard to whatever worries you, not only accept the worst thing that could happen, but make it a point to quantify what the worst thing could be. At the same time, as long as you’re not dead, things are never as bad as they seem to be.
5. Focus on what you want to have happen. Don’t distract yourself with the negatives. Always keep a positive attitude and surround yourself with positive people. It is contagious.
6. Take things a day at a time. Do your best today. Tomorrow, improve on it.
7. Always be moving forward. If you stand still, you’re falling behind.
8. Be quick to decide. Indecision is worst than a bad decision.
9. Measure everything of significance. Just so that you see the fruits of your hard work and motivate yourself further.
10. Anything that is not managed will deteriorate. You have to keep things under control.
11. Pay attention to your competitors, but pay more attention to what you’re doing. Focus, Focus, Focus.
12. Never let anybody push you around. Do what you believe in and Focus, Focus, Focus. Don’t listen to naysayers and dream killers.
13. Never expect life to be fair. Success is the exception to the rule.
14. Solve your own problems. You created your own problems, solve them, learn from them and don’t repeat them.
15. Don’t take yourself too seriously. At a minimum you’ll feel better.
16. There’s always a reason to smile. Definitely J
Special Quote: “When you really want something to happen, the whole universe conspires so that your wish comes true." Paulo Coelho from the Alchemist - a great book, one that I highly recommend.

Insights on...Missed Opportunity
Insights on…
By: Stepan W. Baghdassarian, December 10, 2006
My friend Deborah Shames wrote the following:
“MISSED OPPORTUNITY: The holiday season is typically a time for vacation travel and social functions – but don’t overlook it for generating new business. Corporate and networking parties offer an opportunity to stay in front of colleagues, cement existing business relationships, and nurture new ones. Approach people you haven’t seen in awhile. During the conversation, put your full attention on them. (Nothing is more frustrating than speaking to someone who is scanning the room!) Ask probing questions. Be a good listener. Offer to provide a resource or connection that would be beneficial to them. And share a client anecdote, especially if it reveals a new aspect of your business.”
What Deborah is saying is very true and equally applicable in our personal relationships as well. A missed opportunity is a missed opportunity and it is never coming back.
In the song “Missed Opportunities” Hall & Oates wrote
“Keep on missing each other Our world's out of orderAll I see is missed opportunity.
The story is that Hall & Oates wrote this song after they missed meeting Elvis. Soon afterwards Elvis died.
I don’t mean to be overly dramatic, but I am making a point. If there is someone you would like to meet, just to have that person as a friend, send a Charismas card, invite them to a party that you’re having or your business is having. For the next two weeks, I will be attending at least one or two Holiday functions every night. These are great opportunities for me and I love going to these events and seeing old friends and meeting new people and getting to know them.
As my friend Chien J. Wang says “It’s not who you know, but who knows you.” Get to be known by others for something you do, for your area of specialization, for the resource you can be not only for the people who know you, but for their friends, colleagues and clients. Here the concept of MySpace is right on point. We gather “friends” and get on their pages. Now not only we are “friends” with those people but we are also available and accessible to their friends’ friends and they are equally accessible to us which presents us with great opportunities that hopefully we will not miss.
Special Quote: “What we call failure is not the falling down, but the staying down” Mary Pickford (1893- 1979)
”Merry Christmas & Happy New Year”
I hope you enjoyed reading this blurb and please pass it on to others if you think they will enjoy reading it as well. I will send out similar blurbs from time to time. Send me your thoughts and comments.
